Kopacevo to Sarengrad Croatia - 95km 58 miles
11 October 2023
Today's journey took us through Vukovar, a city that represents the Balkan War as definitively as Mostar, Sarajevo, or Dubrovnik. I wouldn't do it justice to try to detail out the horrors of that conflict, but I am sure anyone over the age of 60 will have some idea of what I am contemplating. If you're under 60, or don't know what I'm talking about please research that most difficult of times for Europe post WW2.
The Memorial Gardens, the street art and murals show a little about the hurt that still pervades this region some 30years later.
Today I wondered if our host last night, Bel, may have helped send his son to Canada for a spell to shelter him for this conflict, and perhaps preserve his life from this dreadful mess. Many men in this area are in wheelchairs, and missing limbs, perhaps also casualties of war. As for mental trauma, a casual passerby like myself can only but guess.
Hit 3,500km with only 1,300 on the river to go!!
Thoughtfully yours,
Doug&Paul
PS - the fortress town of Osijek was quite fantastic! On a happier note, Del sent us away with 50cl of his fi..nest Plum Brandy.
