Vienna to Bratislava Slovakia - 73 km 46 miles
Oct 3, 2023
Last day in Austria as we continue our trek east, next stop is Slovakia! I have two friends that live in Slovakia, both from my Kodak days. Mick is married to a Slovakian lady and I hoped to meet up with him, but they only reside there part of the year, and a long way east of Bratislava... and not now! Also, Slovakian Pavel has returned to his homeland after working in The UK for many years, we have exchanged communications about meeting up but ultimately our midweek flypast could not be accommodated by his work commitments. Czech Pawel from last week and many others have said that Slovakia is a tremendous country to enjoy nature, so undoubtedly Maria and I will make a trip here sometime, especially with kind offers of tourguideship by both of these friends.
The day began late as 'Sven' from Frankfurt came over just on the verge of departure to inquire about our purpose! After that it was The EU, Brexit, the welfare state, capitalism, German Reunification, entreprenurial business flair (UK/USA) vs staid traditional practises (Germany), education, community and the weather!! He was a most interesting individual of sensible pragmatic viewpoint.... it was well worth an additiinal 45minute departure delay!! The delay gave the headwind more time to strengthen, so the going was a little tougher today with this moderate headwind, and in all honestly one rest day is not really enough at this stage, but on we forged nonetheless towards the border and a shortish day to rebuild the 'steam pressure' to get us towards The Black Sea....we are beginning to entertain idle optimism of the vague possibilities that we may actually pull this thing off!!
Arrived OK in Bratislava, but it was indeed a tough day! Beautiful city from what we've seen on our pass through to the campsite 6km north of town. Back in the morning for another look as too tired to muster up the enthusiasm for much more than cooking dinner tonight! Paul out did himself once again with a very tastey and filling Singapore Rice.... 20 ingredients and 4 pots&pans used all for more than one function!!
Guten Auben,
Doug&Paul !!
