Mauthausen to Krems - 115km 70miles
EuroVelo6 comes straight through the middle of the campsite! Sharpish getaway by 0830 after much rain in the night. Forecast good so off we went after tea, coffee and cereal breakfast.
Yet another fast day on level terrain to make the heart soar!!
Second totally flat to downhill day!! And but for 10km 3 days ago it's 3 days on the flat....and FINALLY that pesky wind turned in our favour so that speeds of 30 to 40 km/hr were not only achievable momentarily, but sustainable for long periods!! Reminds me of Nick&I's journey NW out of the Lakes towards Carlisle with that bruising SWerly the north is hardened by.... this was very nice and with 50kg of bike and gear no mean fit!!
As we ate our smoked mackerel lunch at the riverside, we agreed we'd ride on and make a long day of it, this tailwind was not to be taken for granted. Having already done 80km at that point we knew a couple more hours would put us within striking distance of Vienna for the following day, so on we rode for another 2½hrs. The afternoon was very much punctuated by more white wine vineyards than one could ever imagine! No patch is wasted, no slope too steep to grow grapes in this region! I wonder if the Romans kicked this all off?
We finished the day in Krems nr. Grocery Store! Luckily Paul noticed the grocery store closing times and just made it there in time before closing. With apples for €2.50 at the campsite café we knew a meal there may well break the bank.
Pork cassoulet was produced by Chef Paul preceded by some Weiselberger Beers and accompanied by an very pleasant Austrian white wine!
Auf weidersen,
Doug&Paul ✊✊😎😎🤙🤙
