EuroVelo Day 23 - Rest Day in Ulm

Rest Day in Ulm - 5 miles gentle walkabout!

Ulm, Bad-Wurstemberg.... birthplace of the late great Dr. Albert Einstein!!

Never even heard of Ulm.... perhaps knew of it at a time when I learned about Einstein's life, but never well enough to remember this town based on that fact alone!

It is indeed a lovely town, and one worth visiting if it's near your route! Ulm represents the last hold out of the region (Kingdom?) of Bad Wurstemberg, before one crosses the Danube into The Kingdom of Bavaria!

We spent the morning drinking yet more coffee and getting all our (now becoming smelly!!) clothes washed in the well equipped facility of the boating club, come noon we walked into old Ulm to discover what a gem it is!! All the usual wonderful cake and coffee cafés, terrific trompe l'oil painted buildings, and an exquisite cathedral.... needless to say we patronised all the above, and the Black Forest gateau was as fine an example as I can recall of recent years. It was market day so we Hunted&Gathered til we needed to quench our thirsts with a pint of the local brew. Then off to the campsite to begin our preparation for an early getaway tomorrow, and then dinner!

Dinner compromised of what Paul considered to be one of his finest Risotto creations of recent years, being cooked with wild mushrooms, more kidney bean replacement green beans and cooked/accompained by a fine Pinot Grigio, it indeed hit the spot!

This morning we bidded farewell to Petra&Robert, and then stumbled into  and chatted with Gwilliam&Letitia who were just passing through Ulm! A chatty threesome of Swiss footballers created our next entertainment, Klaus, Willy and Michael had us making more friends in the shadiw of the cathedral!

Soon it was time to find our way back to the campsite operating on visual observation only... ie. Without Google Maps.... we challenged ourselves by making for a completely different route back via a different bridge.... this indulged us in the medieval part of town complete with some 700 yr old propeties that appear to be defying a tributary river's wishes to consume them!

Just as the evening was coming to a close we met a most interesting Mannheimanian, with whom we enjoyed a 2½ talk on everyone from human evolution to eating rituals for a healthier life, Oktoberfest North&South and how there's nothing new in the world.... ie.  we all have much to learn from humanities expressions of inhumanity in the 20th century, not just Germany people!🤔

With Jurgen and Michael we discussed issues of entente cordial German style, the lack of great leadership almost everywhere in the world, and the most debatable, Eonstein's Theory of Relativity, and the bending of space-time, you know all light hearted stuff really!!
